With their unique dark wing bases, Dark-winged Groundling males are hard to confuse with other species. They generally perch on emersed vegetation low above the water surface but when disturbed or chasing after intruders they show they’re very fast flyers.
Dark-winged Groundlings are mainly found in Iraq but their area of distribution reaches to Israel and the area around Antalya in southern Turkey. The photos below were made in the Göksu river delta near Adana, where this species is rather abundant above many of the irrigation canals.
