Lestes virens (Small Spreadwing) are found in Europe except the far north, central and south-western Asia and in Morocco and Algeria. Two subspecies are recognized: Lestes virens virens in south-western Europe (Spain, Portugal, parts of France) and Lestes virens vestalis in the rest of the range. L. virens virens looks like a small version of Lestes barbarus (Migrant Spreadwing), with white antehumeral stripes and two-coloured pterostigmas.
