Orthetrum cancellatum (Black-tailed Skimmer) is a fairly large skimmer and one of the most common dragonflies in Europe. It’s found at a wide variety of mainly standing waters, preferably with bare patches along the shore. Breeding habitats can be eutrophic or saline. The geographical range encompasses pretty much all of Europe with exception of northern Fennoscandia. To the east the range covers central Asia and extends to India and China.
Mature males of Black-tailed Skimmers are commonly confused with Blue Chasers, Libellula fulva, which differ by the possession of a dark, triangular patch in the hind wing base.
